0Yesterday, we had the opportunity to show the reel for our upcoming documentary, Love Between the Covers, at the 2012 Romance Writers of America convention in Anaheim, California! We’re extremely grateful for our reception and to the RWA for giving us the opportunity! We’d like to share the reel with you here as well.
Love Between the Covers, a feature-length documentary film, will upend expectations and delight its viewers as it takes them into the remarkable worldwide community of women who create, consume, and love romance novels. The film will be broadcast around the world, seen at film festivals, and used in community settings and classrooms for years to come.
Love Between the Covers will be a fun film—but it’s born out of my serious interest in the unique, intensely passionate, vast, and technologically cutting edge romance community that’s been built online, and in person, literally around the globe. The film will give viewers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the most profitable segment of the publishing industry, and it will explore the enduring, archetypal stories of courtship and love that make these books so powerful. Above all, it will be an exciting cinematic ride with some extraordinary women the audience will enjoy meeting.
For the past year, we’ve stretched our development money further than anyone thought possible. We’ve been shooting at conferences of romance authors and conferences of romance readers, we’ve ventured behind the scenes at publishing offices and into the homes of New York Times bestselling authors, and we’ve been invited to tag along on trips that authors have taken with their readers.
We’ve been immersed in the romance community, and right now, we need funding to continue shooting. Like a good novel, a good film needs a strong narrative arc. So we are planning to shoot over the next few years, capturing the stories we are following—as they unfold. If we are forced to stop shooting (for lack of funds), we’ll miss important turning points in our story!

- pay for editing the film (a process that takes many months for a complex long-form film)
- pay for continuing to make videos for this website, to share what we are doing, take you behind the scenes, and get input from you
- pay for pickup shoots (the shooting one does while editing)
- pay to help keep PopularRomanceProject.org going strong (we don’t want to disappoint all of the people, from more than 120 countries, who’ve been visiting the blog!)
